Rated 18A for Smoking: Report Argues Tobacco Ban for Films Marketed to Minors

A U.K. report argues depictions of smoking in movies should be restricted to adult-rated titles.  Report co-author Christopher Millet of Imperial College London says that without such a restriction, governments may find themselves indirectly advocating underage smoking.  In Canada, provincial and federal tax credit programs support Hollywood film productions.

Although the smoking ban has not gained traction among Canada’s film classification authorities – all of which operate under provincial legislation – the U.S. MPAA ratings board now places smoking warnings in its rating materials.  Last year’s Alice in Wonderland earned a PG rating, in part, for a scene of “a smoking caterpillar.

Critics of a stricter ratings approach say an all-out ban would be inefficient and amount to censorship.
